Announcing the 155th San Francisco Italian Heritage Parade

Tony Gemignani and Judge Claude Perasso Named Grand Marshals of the 2023 San Francisco Italian Heritage Parade

San Francisco, CA – September 7, 2023 – The San Francisco Italian Heritage Parade Committee is thrilled to announce the return of the parade to the streets of San Francisco on October 8, 2023. Renowned pizzaiolo and restaurateur Tony Gemignani and esteemed Judge Claude Perasso will be honored as the Grand Marshals for the highly anticipated event.

Tony Gemignani, a world-class pizza acrobat and 13-time World Pizza Champion, has been an indispensable figure in the culinary world. Born and raised in the Bay Area, Tony’s passion for pizza grew into numerous award-winning pizzerias across the United States, each dedicated to preserving the authentic flavors of Italy. His extensive contributions to the culinary landscape and his deep-rooted love and dedication to San Francisco make Tony an ideal choice as Grand Marshal for the 2023 Italian Heritage Parade.

Judge Claude Perasso, a distinguished legal luminary born to Italian immigrants, has played a pivotal role in the San Francisco community, demonstrating unwavering dedication to upholding justice in the city and across the country. His commitment to both public service and his Italian heritage makes him an inspiring and honorable selection as Civic Grand Marshal for this year’s parade.

The San Francisco Italian Heritage Parade is the longest continuously running Italian Heritage Parade in the United States, celebrating the accomplishments and culture of all Italian-Americans. Held annually in October since 1868, the event attracts visitors from around the world with its procession of marching bands, colorful floats, vintage cars, and costumed participants.

“We are incredibly excited to honor Tony Gemignani and Judge Claude Perasso as our 2023 Grand Marshals,” said Paul Tonelli, President of the San Francisco Italian Heritage Parade Committee. “Both Tony and Judge Perasso embody the essence of Italian heritage and have made significant contributions to our Italian-American community. Their participation in the parade will make this year’s event even more special and memorable, and we welcome one and all to join us in the celebration.”

“I’m honored to be named a Grand Marshal for this year’s San Francisco Italian Heritage Parade,” said Tony Gemignani. “I have enjoyed being part of this community for almost 15 years and love sharing my passion for our culture through food, flavors, and hospitality at all my North Beach restaurants. I look forward to this important day, celebrating our heritage together with incredible people who make it all possible. Come for the pizza and stay for the parade!”

The parade will begin at 12:30pm at the foot of Jefferson and Powell Streets in Fisherman’s Wharf, proceed south through North Beach (San Francisco’s historically Italian-American neighborhood) on Columbus Avenue and end in Washington Square in front of Saints Peter and Paul Church. Parade viewing is available throughout the entire route. It will feature Italian music, performances, floats, and representatives from national and local Italian-American organizations and businesses.
