The San Francisco Italian Heritage Parade Committee is thrilled to announce the return of the parade to the streets of San Francisco on Sunday, October 13, 2024. This year, Joe D’Alessandro, the recently retired President and CEO of the San Francisco Travel Association will be honored as the Grand Marshal.

D’Alessandro, a proud Italian-American, is celebrated for his 18-year tenure as the head of SF Travel, where he helped boost San Francisco’s profile as a premier destination for global tourism and conventions. Under his leadership, the city saw record-breaking tourism growth, earning its place as one of the most visited destinations in the world. His passion for his Italian heritage and dedication to fostering cultural pride make him a ideal Grand Marshal to lead this year’s festivities.

Now in its 156th year, the San Francisco Italian Heritage Parade is the longest continuously running Italian-American parade in the United States. Since its inception in 1868, the event has grown into a grand celebration of Italian culture and pride, attracting thousands of visitors annually with its colorful floats, spirited marching bands, vintage cars, and exuberant performances. As it winds through the vibrant streets of North Beach, participants and spectators alike will be immersed in the rich history and cultural traditions of Italian-Americans that were among the city’s first immigrant groups.

“We are beyond thrilled to have Joe D’Alessandro serve as our 2024 Grand Marshal,” said Paul Tonelli, President of the San Francisco Italian Heritage Parade Committee. “Joe embodies the spirit of our Italian-American community—his leadership, passion, and unwavering commitment to both our city and our culture have been inspirational. His participation in the parade this year is a testament to his impact on our community and will make the event even more special. We welcome one and all to join us in the celebration!”

The parade will kick off at 12:30 p.m. at the foot of Jefferson and Powell Streets in Fisherman’s Wharf, making its way through the heart of North Beach along Columbus Avenue, and concluding in historic Washington Square, in front of Saints Peter and Paul Church. Along the route, spectators can enjoy live Italian music, performances, and appearances by local and national Italian-American organizations.
